History of the New Year’s Eve Labyrinth Walk
We walk in solidarity with labyrinth walkers world-wide on this New Year’s Eve. This celebration was first begun in San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral by Canon for Special Ministries, Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress. In 1995 she authored a wonderful book introducing the history and practice of walking labyrinths entitled: “Walking a Sacred Path.” Awakening more people to the labyrinth as a spiritual tool to inspire change and transformation in individuals and communities became the focus of her ministry.

On the eve of the millennium Dr. Artress had a vision that people around the planet would walk a labyrinth as a gesture toward heightening the level of human awareness we all need to survive the twenty-first century. That vision is still alive and well among labyrinth walkers world-wide. Those who use a labyrinth for meditation and prayer regularly believe it deeply connects mind and body with the spiritual world. Any tool that helps us rotate around another axis other than our own ego has much to teach our modern world. Any tool that quiets the mind and opens the soul has much to offer pilgrims of every faith ... and those still looking.
