The Alcyon Center is an experience of being welcomed, body, soul, and spirit, into the life of a small, practicing contemplative community. The Center's hospitality reflects the stunning natural beauty of its Island home, the warmth of its welcoming hosts, the depth of its silence, the refreshment of its daily rhythms, and the openness of its doors to all who seek transformative rest, renewal, program, study, practice, and training in the interior life. The Alcyon Center functions as a non-profit organization with a Board of Directors and is a 501(c)(3) public charitable organization established in 2007.
The Alcyon Center Vision
The vision for the Center is rooted in a desire for bold and practical ways to meet the spiritual hunger of our times. Providing a peaceful setting and an experience of living a daily rhythm of work, prayer, study, and rest constitutes the main way of bringing this vision to life. Kathryn E. Booth and Joan Jordan Grant are co-founders and directors of The Alcyon Center. As ordained pastors in the United Church of Christ, they bring experience in parish ministry, teaching, intentional spiritual community life, spiritual direction and formation to this retreat ministry.
1. We are Associates with the Northeast Guild for Spiritual Formation. Guild Associates are Friends of the Northeast Guild who, seeking to ground their lives and work in unconditional Presence, have chosen to ally themselves as a network of contemplatives for purposes of spiritual support and growth, collegiality and accountability.
Vocationally, Associates come from various walks of life: as clergy, spiritual directors, retreat leaders, small practice group facilitators, educators, psychotherapists, social workers, physicians, pharmacologists, and many others. We enjoy landscaping, gardening, farming, woodworking, cooking, writing, and all manner of art and recreating in Nature. We seek to live as fully as possible our active lives from our grounding in the contemplative life.
Our lives as Guild Associates are rooted in shared values related to our daily spiritual practices, the conduct of our personal and vocational lives, and our way of being with one another in our gatherings. We have written very simple guidelines for each of these three areas: Guild Rule of Life, Guild Guidelines for Ethical Conduct, and Guidelines for Small and Large Group Conversations.
2. The Alcyon Center is an Associated Ministry and Mission of the Somesville (ME) Union Meeting House, UCC. This visionary local church has called the Reverends Kathryn Booth and Joan Jordan Grant to develop new forms of ministry that nurture the human soul and spirit.
Our Name: Alcyon
Ceryle alcyon is the scientific name for the bird commonly called the Belted Kingfisher. These Kingfishers seasonally inhabit the tidal cove where the Alcyon Center is located. They are the true hosts to us all, both stewards and guests. Their story, first written in Ovid's Metamorphoses, tells of how the winds and waves of ordinary life come to be stilled during halcyon days. The Alcyon Center offers you an invitation to come spend some time with the Kingfishers for a stilling of your waves and winds into peace and tranquility.
